🐾 Tail Pointing Straight Up

In some dogs, particularly dominant breeds, a stiff upright tail can also signal assertiveness or a challenge. Watch the rest of their body: a relaxed face alongside a high tail usually means curiosity, while a tense body may indicate they're on guard.
🐾 Wagging Tail
Not all wags are created equal! A loose, wide wag that involves the whole back end is the classic sign of a happy, excited dog. A slow, low wag can indicate uncertainty or submission. A fast, stiff wag held high can actually signal arousal or agitation — not necessarily friendliness. Context is everything, so always read the full body language alongside the tail.

When your dog lies flat on their belly with their back legs stretched out behind them, it's known as a "sploot" — and it's as adorable as it sounds. It can also be a sign they're just completely at ease in their space.
🐾 Staring at You
A soft, relaxed gaze from your dog is a sign of love and bonding. Studies have shown that mutual gazing between dogs and their owners releases oxytocin — the same "love hormone" triggered between parents and babies. Your dog may also stare at you when they want something — food, a walk, or attention. A hard, unblinking stare directed at another dog or stranger, however, can be a sign of tension or a warning — best to redirect in those situations.

The classic "donut" sleeping position means your dog is conserving warmth and protecting their vital organs. It's an instinctive position inherited from their wild ancestors.
